You should go around the north side, absolutely. The best views are here. The south side is pretty empty and the last time I was there, had blocked the road. Most people from Kahului to the north and follow the road along the north coast of Hana, and a little to see O'Hea Gulch (aka Sacré-seven pools) and then the same way.

I always recommend a guide ( "Maui Revealed" is my favorite), so you can find attractions along the route. They want to see the bamboo forest, Ke'anae Arboretum, the cave of lava, O'Hea and Gulch. but also many other beautiful things on the road, past waterfalls and lookouts. If the book still lists the blue pool as an attraction, just ignore it no longer open to the public.
